the new generation people
Academy Volunteer Programme
Neugene International Academy helps raise young people’s aspirations and bridge the gap between education and work by giving them access to real experience of the world of work.
We provide a structured programme of paid internships, mentoring by employer volunteers, motivational lectures and workshops to the new generation the work experience and skills they need to be able to perform more effectively in the wider world. This highly successful volunteer programme, running for over a decade is designed to complement students’ studies.
We work with more than 8,000 volunteers from over 2,000 employers large and small. Our employers are from the public, private and voluntary sectors and include major multinationals.
Neugene Academy students are often from urban areas of social need. We give students, who may have little family background of higher education or experience of social mobility, the confidence and opportunity to engage with employers.
Over 80% of volunteer students’ progress to university or directly into employment or work based learning such as apprenticeships or school leaver programmes.
And it’s not just the students who benefit. Employers report that engaging with a Neugene Academy enhances staff development and demonstrates their corporate values.
Some volunteers have a long history of working in business; others have just graduated from university. All enjoy the company of young people and genuinely want to support and guide them by sharing their knowledge and experience.
Within an overarching Neugene Academy framework, we work flexibly with each employer to best meet the needs of their particular business and local community. For example, you or your colleagues might like to:
• mentor a student
• speak to a group of young people in their classroom
• host a tour of your workplace
• provide an internship placement
• join a Neugene Academy Local Advisory Board in your community
• host a reunion for our Neugene Academy Network of graduates.
Some supporting employers offer one volunteer for just a couple of hours a year, while others embed the programme company-wide.
"Being involved with the Neugene Volunteer Programme underlines our commitment to supporting communities across the continent. This programme not only helps us to identify potential talented employees of the future, but also contributes to our corporate responsibility agenda."
